Buckwheat

When to Sow
Spring sowing
March to May
Ideal for flowers during the first growing season.

Autumn sowing
Late August to October
Allows natural winter stratification, encouraging vigorous growth and excellent flowering the following year.

How to Prepare the Soil
Choose a sunny position wherever possible.
Remove all existing grass, weeds and vegetation.
Cultivate the soil to produce a fine crumbly seed bed.
Remove stones, roots and debris.
Do not add fertiliser, manure or compost immediately before sowing as high fertility encourages grasses rather than flowering species.

How to Sow
Scatter the seed evenly across the prepared ground.
For the best distribution mix the seed with dry sand before sowing.
Lightly rake the seed into the surface.
Do not bury deeply as many species require light for successful germination.
Firm the soil by gently walking over the area or using a roller.
Water lightly during dry weather until seedlings become established.

Aftercare
Keep the soil moist during germination if rainfall is limited.
Avoid heavy foot traffic while young plants establish.
Do not apply fertiliser.
Allow flowers to bloom naturally throughout the season to maximise nectar production for pollinating insects.
Once flowering has finished, cut the area back to approximately 5 to 10 centimetres. Leave the cuttings on the surface for several days to allow ripe seed to fall before removing them. This encourages natural reseeding and healthy growth year after year.
